《淮南子》一书内容繁富,包罗万象,涉及到哲学、政治、经济、军事、天文、地理、农学、生物、音律、神话等方面,可以说是我国古代一部百科全书式的著作。然而,《淮南子》;也并不是杂而无统,散而无归,全书以“太上之道”为宗旨,统合百家之说,将各篇的内容熔铸成一个有机的整体。“道本论”是《淮甫子》全书的核心,作者继承了先秦道家学派特别是老子、庄子的思想,对道做了更进一步的阐述与说明。《淮南子》的道论包括“道本论”与“生成论”两个部分。“道本论”主要论述道的至上性、独一性,及道存在的基本特征。作者认为道是天地万物存在的终极根据,它能覆天载地,贯通四方八极,它高不可际,深不可测,包裹天地,禀授无形。与宇宙大化中各种具体的事物相比,道有着自己独特的存在方式。宇宙中各种具体的事物都有固定的存在特性,有的事物刚强,有的事物柔弱;有的事物高大,有的事物矮小;有的事物天性清静,有的事物则躁动不安。任何事物都是执持着一定的规定,难以兼持它的对立的方面。因此,任何具体事物的存在总是有着缺憾和固塞,难以开通流化,与天地大化相追随。而至高无上、独一无二的道则不同,它的存在有着自己独特的方式,它不固定于某种具体的存在特征,而能兼通、综合对立的方面,能将各种矛盾对立的方面巧妙地统合成一体。因此它能应物不穷,贯穿于天地道化的始终。正因为道具有最大的包容性,所以才能成为万事万物的渊源。
作者还秉承老子的旨意,对道的德性做了探讨,认为道具有最伟大、最玄妙的德性,它生育万物却不据为已有、创化万象却不去主宰。天地之间的各种生物都因道的流行而获得生命,但却从来不会想到去报答它;同样,这些生物也是因道的流行而终止它们的生命,但不会因此而怨恨它。总之,道是在不知不觉中完成它的造化,它超越各种赞誉与诽谤之上,有着最渊深、最伟大的德行。这种德行是圣人立德修行的基础,也是圣王为政治国的根本。《淮南子》除了论述道本身的存在特征和运行过程之外,还对道生化宇宙的过程做了认真的探讨。这部分内容构成了其道论中的生成论思想。在《俶真训》中,作者对宇宙的起源做了探讨,将宇宙的演化分成皇大阶段,这就是:有始者,有未始有有始者,有未始有夫未始有有始者。在第一个阶段中,万物处于积聚状态,虽已呈现出萌发之兆,但还没有发展完善,没有最终形成。第二个阶段与第一个阶段相比,宇宙更加空灵透明,天地阴阳二气互相交合,“相与优游,竟畅于宇宙之间”。宇宙中和气絪缊,处处酝酿着生化之机、但有形有质的物体还没有生化出来,只有生化的朕兆,而没有生命的形态。从这一阶段继续往前上溯,便进入到宇宙创化的原初阶段,即篇中所说的“有未始有夫未始有有始者”。此时的宇宙虚无寂寥,萧条冷清,“天合和而未降,地怀气而未扬”、一片寂静。但这种寂静并不是死亡的寂静,而是蕴含着生化之机。对这三个阶段中的物质存在的状态,作者也分别进行了描述。这就是与上述三个阶段相对应的三种状态:“有有者、有无者,有未始有有无者,有未始有夫未始有有无者。”其中第一阶段包括有有者与有无者两方面。在第一个阶段中,万物参差错落,青翠茂盛,可以捉摸度量,除了各种各样的物质之外,还有物质赖以存在的空间。这种空间“视之不见其形,听之不闻其声,们之不可得也,望之不可极也”,浩浩瀚瀚,漫无边际,各种各样的物质都在其间繁衍生息。在第二个阶段,物质与空间尚未分化,宇宙还处于棍沌鸿濛的状态,它深宏广大,但却没有内外的区分。由第二阶段再向上追溯,就是所谓“有未始有夫未始有有无者”。此时“天地未剖,阴阳未判,四时未分,万物未生,汪然平静,寂然清澄,莫见其形”,宇宙万物处于最初的原始状态。
此外,在《天文训》中也谈到宇宙天地的创生问题,作者认为天地万物的生化经历了从道至虚廓,再至宇宙,再至气,再至天地阴阳、四时万物的过程。“ 天地未形, 冯冯翼翼, 洞洞...., 故日太昭。道始于虚廓, 虚廓生宇宙。宇宙生气。气有涯垠,清阳者薄靡而为天,重浊者凝滞而为地。清妙之合专易,重浊之凝竭难。故天先成而地后定。”至于阴阳、四时、万物的产生,则是由于天地之气合散的结果:“天地之袭精为阴阳,阴阳之专精为四时,四时之散精为万物”。这种对宇宙万物创生过程的解释极有见地,其基本观点与现代宇宙学关于宇宙创生的假说暗合,这充分反映了我国古人的智慧以及对自然的探索精神。
《淮南子》对人生观问题也有充分的论述。作者认为大丈夫处世应遵循道的准则,纵志舒节,与时俯仰,针对当时社会人们拘拘于功名富贵、荣辱得失的现象,作者认为真正伟大的人应胸怀凌云之志,以“道”做为终极关怀的对象。只有这样才能拓宽生命的境界,使生命获得最大的意义:“是故大丈夫恬然无思,活然无虑,以天为盖,以地为舆,四时为马,阴阳为御,乘去凌霄,与造化者俱。纵志舒节,以驰大区。可以步而步,可以骤而骤,令雨师洒道,使风伯扫尘。电以为鞭策,雷以为车轮。上游于霄雿之野,下出于无垠之门。”( 《原道训》)。这种气魄是何等的宏大!作者最羡慕的是“性合于道”的真人,认为真人能还本返朴,与道合体。他们恪守人的本性,无思无为,卓然独立,与宇宙万物相感相应。因此,只有真人才能领略到人生的真正意义,是大道的最完满的体现者。
在论及与生命紧密关联的死亡问题时,书中有许多精辟的见解,作者认为生命与死亡、成功与毁坏,都是物质存在的不同形式,两者之间没有本质的区别。一般人总是热衷于生命的快乐,而对死亡则心怀恐惧。作者认为这种态度不是达人所持,而是庸人的一偏之见。作者主张对死生不应过于介怀,尤其不能将爱憎喜怒加于其间,应懂得生与死都是天地造化的自然流变,是气化的不同环节。“吾生也有七尺之形,吾死也有一棺之土。吾生之比于有形之类,犹吾死之沦于无形之中也。然则吾生也,物不以益众;吾死也,土不以加厚,吾又安知所喜憎利害其间者乎?”( 《精神训》)天地造化万物就好像陶人制造陶器一样,陶人把土制成盆盎等各种陶器,表面上看似乎与土有分别,但在本质上仍然不过是土;反之,当陶器破碎时,它们不再拥有盆盎之形,似乎是一种毁败。但实际也不过是返回到它们的原初状态,跟它们为盆盎之时,也没有什么本质的区别。何况“始吾未生之时,焉知生之乐也?今吾未死,又焉知死之不乐也”( 《俶真训》)!在达人看来,死亡对人来说是一种长久的休息,通人因此无需对生死做过多的关注,而应心存道化,与天地造化共呼息。
对现实人生和百姓疾苦的关注,在《淮南子》中也得到了充分体现。书中有一个贯彻始终的主题,就是对治国之道的探索。作者认为,终极之道既可用于治身,又可推及于治国,治国之道与治身之道是贯通的。该书始终以至高无上的道做为立说的根基,通过贯通古今天人来探索治道之本。作者首先对所谓“至德之世”进行了考察,认为在这一时期人们的天赋本性朴实纯厚,智诈尚未萌发,因此人们的一言一行都天然地与道契合。此时既没有仁义礼乐,也没有君臣主仆。人们仰承天和,隐然自成,享受着至纯至粹的人生快乐。
伴随着宇宙的演化进程,那始初的大朴渐渐离散,世俗的风气也随之衰颓。到了伏羲氏统治时期,人类便开始萌发智巧之心,走向与自然分离、抗争的道路。这种情形一直延续下去,经过神农氏、黄帝氏、昆吾氏、夏后氏,直到周室之衰、列国争霸,人类在与自然和自身欲望的抗争过程中,建立了礼乐制度。因此,以仁义道德为核心内容的礼乐制度实际上是道德衰败的发展结果,表明人已背离了原初的大朴之道。仁义礼智虽然可以维持社会秩序、规范人们的行为,但却是建立在人性堕落的基础上的。作者认为,人主治国应当体察天道,以天道作为终极的依据,“处无为之事,而行不言之教”( 《主术训》)。只有这样,才能上通天道,感化群生,使人们重新回复到原初的纯朴状态。
《淮南子》一书还包含着十分丰富的自然科学内容,书中的《天文训》《地形训》《时则训》等集中论述了天文学、地理学、农学和律历学的有关内容,反映了古人对自然界的认识水平。在《天文训》中,作者对五星、二十八宿、八风等作了专门研究,对五星的行度、运行周期做了科学测定。篇中还根据北斗星的运行规律,第一次完整地记载了二十四节气的名称及其理论依据。同时根据对木星的研究,制订了岁星纪年法和干支纪年法,此外,《天文训》还依据对自然现象广泛而细微的观察,研究了自然界中各种物类的感应关系,如“日至而糜鹿解”“月虚而鱼脑流”“阳燧见日,则燃而为火;方诸见月,则津而为水”等等。这些发现,为后世人们的进一步研究提供了丰富的资料和可贵的启示。在《地形训》中,作者还记述了九州、九山、九塞、九薮、六水等山川形势、要塞湖泊。并对四海之内的东西、南北长度做了计算,得出了东西长度为二万八千里、南北为二万六千里的结论。此外《地形训》还记载了东方、东南方、南方、西南方、西方、西北方、北方、东北方和中央等九地的代表. 物产。同时对人们的饮食习惯与其智慧、习性的关系做了探讨,充分反映了作者敏锐的洞察力和高超的概括能力。此外《淮南子》的《说山训》和《说林训》两篇还提出了许多精辟的格言,这些格言充满了智慧,是对人们长期生活经验的高度提炼。如“三人比肩,不能外出户;一人相随,可以通天下”“力贵齐,知贵捷”“听有音之音者聋,听无音之音者聪;不聋不聪,与神相通”“田中之潦,流入于海;附耳之言,闻于千里”“以水和水不可食,一弦之瑟不可听”等等,词意隽永,富于哲理,读来耐人寻味。至于该书在其它各方面的内容,我们将在各篇大意中具体介绍,此处不再赘述。
总之,《淮南子》一书包含了极为丰富的内容,相信读者在认真阅读之后,会获得许多有益的知识和启迪。
