本篇以长文为主，内容几乎全是有关尧、舜、禹、汤、孔子百里奚等三代贤王和春秋贤人的事迹，具有重要的史料价值。但一般读者读来较为生涩，全篇原文共9章，本书除9•5“君权谁授”为全章外，前面3章均为节选。
大孝终身慕父母
【原文】
人少，则慕①父母；知好色，则慕少艾②；有妻子，则慕妻子； 仕则慕君，不得于君则热中③。大孝终身慕父母。五十而慕者，予于大舜见之矣。
【注释】
①慕：爱慕，依恋。②少艾：指年轻美貌的人。③热中：焦急得心中发热。
【译文】
人在年幼的时候，爱慕父母；懂得喜欢女子的时候，就爱慕年轻漂亮的姑娘。有了妻子以后，便爱慕妻子；做了官便爱慕君王，得不到君王的赏识便内心焦急得发热。不过，最孝顺的人却是终身都爱慕父母。到了五十岁还爱慕父母的，我在伟大的舜身上见到了。
【读解】
终身都爱慕父母的有两种情况：
一种是终身都只爱慕父母，其他如年轻漂亮的姑娘、妻子、君王等统统不爱。
另一种是既终身爱慕你母，又不妨害爱姑娘，爱妻子，爱君王等。 若以弗洛依德博士的观点来看，第二种是正常的情感心态，第一种则出于“恋父”、“恋母”情结了。
孟子这段话是通过对大舜作心理分析后引出的。大舜由于没有得到父母的喜爱，所以，即使获得了绝色美女和妻子，甚至自己已做了君王，达到了权力和财富的顶峰以后，也仍然郁郁寡欢， 思蓦父母之爱。
所以，如果我们要做到“大孝”，那就应该既“终身慕父母”， 又爱少艾和妻子，这才是健康正常的心态。

君子也难免受骗
【原文】
昔者有馈生鱼于郑子产，子产使校人①畜之池。校人烹之，反 命曰“始舍之，圉圉（2）焉；少则洋洋③焉；攸然④而逝。”子产曰： “得其所哉！得其所哉！”校人出，曰：“孰谓子产智？予既烹而食之，曰，‘得其所哉！得其所哉！”’故君子可欺以其方，难罔以非其道。
【注释】
①校人：管理池塘的小官②圉圉（yu）：疲惫的样子。③洋洋： 舒缓摇尾的样于。④攸然：迅速的样子。
【译文】
从前有人送条活鱼给郑国的子产，子产叫主管池塘的人把它畜养在池塘里。那人却把鱼煮来吃了，回报说：“刚放进池塘里时， 它还要死不活的；一会儿便摇摆着尾巴活动起来了；突然间，一下子就游得不知去向了。”于产说：“它去了它应该去的地方啦！它去了它应该去的地方啦！”那人从子产那里出来后说：“谁说子产聪明呢？我明明已经把鱼煮来吃了，可他还说‘它去了它应该去的地方啦！它去了它应该去的地方啦！”所以，君子可能被合乎倩理的方法所欺骗，但难以被不合情理的方法所欺骗。
【读解】
骗子有术，也有限。
有术就能使人受骗，不仅使普通人受骗，就是有德有才的君子，像郑国贤宰相于产那样的聪明人，也照样受骗。只不过这很有个条件，就是你得把谎话说圆，说得合乎情理，就像那个“校 人”那样，把鱼开始怎么样，接着又怎么样，最后又怎么样说得 来非常生动细致，活灵活现，难怪得子产要上当，要相信他了。这里面还有一层微妙的原因在于，越是君子，其实越容易受骗。因为君子总是以君子之腹度人，凡事不大容易把人往坏处想，结果往往上骗子的当。倒是真正的小人，以小人之心度人，把人往坏处想，往往还不容易被欺瞒过去。所以，说君子也难免受骗，这原本不应该是什么奇怪的问题。
当然，还是那句话，要让君子上当受骗，得有合乎情理的说法，否则，还是容易被识破的。这就是骗亦有限的话题了。
明白了这个道理以后，即使你是君子，是不是也应该保持戒心，多一分警惕，以免上当受骗呢！

以意逆志，是为得之
【原文】
故说诗者，不以文害辞，不以辞害志。以意逆①志，是为得之。 如以辞而已矣，《云汉》之诗曰：“周余黎民，靡有子遗②。”信斯也，是周无遗民也。
【注释】
①逆：揣测。②靡有：没有。不遗；二字同义，都是“余”的意思。
【译文】
所以解说诗的人，不要拘于文字而误解词句，也不要拘于词句而误解诗人的本意。要通过自己读作品的感受去推测诗人的本意，这样才能真正读懂诗。如果拘于词句，那《云汉》这首诗说； “周朝剩余的百姓，没有一个留存。”相信这句话，那就会认为周朝真是一个人也没有了。
【读解】
孟子是在和学生咸丘蒙讨论有关大舜的事迹时顺便说到读诗的方法问题的。但他的这段话，尤其是关于“以意逆志”的命题， 却为了中国古代文学批评中的名言，直到今天，仍然受到现代文学批评专家、学者们的重视。
所谓“诗言志”，语言只是载体、媒介。因此，读诗贵在与诗人交流思想感情。
刘勰《文心雕龙•知音》）说：“夫缀文者情动而辞发，观文者 披文以入情，沿波讨源，虽幽必显。”
“情动而辞发”是“诗言志”；“披文以入情”是“以意逆志”。 为勰发挥的，正是孟子的读诗法。
至于现代批评所说的“一千个读者就有一千个哈姆雷特”，强调鉴赏者的再创造，那就和孟子“以意运志”的读诗法相去较远了。

【原文】
万章曰：“尧以天下与舜，有诸？”
孟子曰：“否，天子不能以天下与人。”
“然则舜有天下也，孰与之？”
曰：“天与之。”
“天与之者，谆谆①然命之乎？”
曰：“否，天不言，以行与事示之而已矣。”
曰：“以行与事示之者，如之何？”
曰：“天子能荐人于天，不能使天与之天下；诸侯能荐人于天 子，不能使天子与之诸侯；大夫能荐人于诸侯，不能使诸侯与之 大夫。昔者，尧荐舜于天，而天受之；暴②之于民，而民受之。故 曰，天不言，以行与事示之而已矣。” 曰：“敢问荐之于天，而天受之；暴之于民，而民受之，如何？”
曰：“使之主祭，而百神享之，是天受之；使之主事，而事治， 百姓安之，是民受之也。天与之，人与之，故曰，天子不能以天 下与人。舜相尧二十有八载，非人之所能为也，天也。尧崩，三 年之丧毕，舜避尧之子于南河③之南，天下诸侯朝觐者，不之尧之 子而之舜；讼狱者，不之尧之子而之舜；沤歌者，不沤歌尧之子而沤歌舜。故曰，天也。夫然后之中国④，践天子位焉。而（5）居尧 之宫，逼尧之子，是篡也，非天与也。《太誓》曰：‘天视自我民 视，天听自我民听。’此之谓也。”

①谆谆（Zhun）：反复叮咛。②暴（pu）：显露，公开。③南河： 舜避居处，在今山东濮县东二十五里，河在尧都之南，故称南河。④中 国；这里指帝都。⑤而：如。
【译文】
万章问：“尧拿天下授与舜，有这回事吗？”
孟子说：“不，天子不能够拿天下授与人。”
万章问：“那么舜得到天下，是谁授与他的呢？”
孟子回答说：“天授与的。”
万章问：“天授与他时，反复叮咛告诫他吗？”
孟子说：“不，天不说话，拿行动和事情来表示罢了。”
万章问：“拿行动和事情来表示，是怎样的呢？”
孟子回答说：“天子能够向天推荐人，但不能强迫天把天下授与人；诸侯能够向天子推荐人，但不能强迫天子把诸侯之位授与这人；大夫能够向诸侯推荐人，但不能强迫诸侯把大夫之位授 一这人。从前，尧向天推荐了舜，天接受了；又把舜公开介绍给老百姓，老百姓也接受了。所以说，天不说话，拿行动和事情来表示罢了。”
万章说：“请问推荐给天，天接受了；公开介绍给老百姓，老百姓也接受了是怎么回事呢？”
孟子说：“叫他主持祭祀，所有神明都来享用，这是天接受了； 叫他主持政事，政事治理得很好，老百姓很满意，这就是老百姓也接受了。天授与他，老百姓授与他，所以说，天子不能够拿天 下授与人。舜辅佐尧治理天下二十八年，这不是凭一个人的意志够做得到的，而是天意。尧去世后，舜为他服丧三年，然后便避居于南河的南边去，为的是要让尧的儿子继承天下。可是，天 下诸侯朝见天子的，都不到芜的儿子那里去，却到舜那里去；打官司的，都不到尧的儿子那里去，却到舜那里去；歌颂的人，也不歌颂尧的儿子，却歌颂舜。所以你这是天意。这样，舜才回到帝都，登上了天于之位。如果先前舜就占据尧的宫室，逼迫尧的儿子让位，那就是篡夺，而不是天授与他的了。《太誓》说过： ‘上天所见来自我们老百姓的所见，上天所听来自我们老百姓的所 听。’说的正是这个意思。”
【读解】
君权谁授？
按照一般传统的理解，在禅让制的时代，这一代的君权是由上一代的天子授与的。这也就是孟子的学生万章的看法。
可孟子却作出了与传统看法不一样的回答，认为天子个人并没有权力把天下拿来授与谁，而只有上天和下民（老百姓）才有 这个权力。 很明显，孟子是脚跨上下两个方面，一只脚跨在上天，有 “君权神授”的神秘色彩；另一只脚却跨在民间，有“民约论”的 味道。而他的论述，则正好是在这两方面寻求沟通的桥粱，寻找 “天意”与“民意”的结合点。所谓“究天人之际”，研究天与人的关系，这是中国古代哲学家、思想家探讨的核心问题，而孟子 在这里的探讨，是从政治、君权的角度来进行的，也算是一个重 要的课题罢。
事实上，孟子在这里的分析论述，与其说强调“天”的一方面，不如说强调“民”的一方面更为贴切。就以他所分析的舜的情况来看，舜之所以最终“之中国，践天子位”，完全是因为“天 下诸侯朝觐者，不之尧之子而之舜；讼狱者，不之尧之子而之舜诓歌者，不诓歌尧之子而怄歌舜”。所以，与其说是“天授”，不如说是“民授”。他最后所引《太誓》上的两句话：“天视自我民 视，天听自我民听。”不也一方面说明了“天人之际”的密切联系， 另一方面说明了“天意”从根本上说还是来自“民意”吗？
可见，孟子的政治学说里的确怎么也抹不掉“以民为本”的思想。
君权谁授？
从根本上来回答，是民授而不是神授、天授，当然更不是哪个个人所授，即便你是伟大如尧，也没有那样大的权力。
